Smoke Free Housing

STAND, a project of Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails, is working to educate, empower, and organize the community to demand smoke-free housing to reduce the exposure to secondhand smoke in shared housing situations (apartments, condos, tri- and duplexes).

STAND educates city councils, boards of supervisors and property owners on the health and financial benefits of smoke-free housing policies that protect residents from tobacco smoke that drifts from neighboring units or common areas.

Every year 53,000 nonsmokers in the U.S. die from the effects of secondhand smoke. In California, it kills more than 4,700 nonsmokers each year. Secondhand smoke exposure can cause lung disease, heart disease, and cancer.*
